It seems like everyone is afraid this election year. In Philippians 4:6-8, an early Christian named Paul tells us we don’t have to be afraid of anything. The ruler in his time was an emperor named Nero who over the course of his reign murdered lots of people, but Paul was not afraid. Fear leads to two responses: 1) flight or 2) fight, neither of which is loving our neighbor as God intends. If you have a relationship with God, nothing can harm you, and you can respond a different way. You can flourish. All because God guards you and you’re a citizen of his country. Now our minds are no longer set on fear, but peace and joy as we go forward into the voting season. With Jesus, we’re safe, free, and fearless.

One clarification to this sermon. The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians in AD 60-62 and Nero’s persecution of the Christians in Rome took place in AD 64. That is the year Rome burned. However, Paul was still living under the shadow of this evil ruler and Christians were experiencing varying levels of persecution. Despite all of this, Paul was not afraid and even had joy.
